In Memorium: Sally Rice

Sally Rice

Sally Rice was a long time resident of Burlington for thirty-five years and a much longer resident of Vermont. She led an incredible adventurous life traveling the world.

While undeterred by solo travel, her best travel adventures were always in the company of family and close friends, but none more so than with her loving partner and companion of the last 10 years, Darwin Niles. Together they embarked on 44 incredible journeys across Japan, Mongolia, Svalbard, Easter Island, Ushuaia, Armenia, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Australia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Komodo Island and countless other destinations. Sally treated every adventure as if the world was trying to challenge the bounds of her curiosity, knowledge, energy and, most importantly, her independence.

She was a teacher, traveler and activist helping refugees and displaced persons become welcome community members and was a former mayor of Montpelier

She was a remarkably positive person and a joy to be around. She was a member of the bocce club for several seasons on both the Red League's “Roller Derby” and the Blue League's “Young At Heart”. She passed away on Easter Sunday of 2025. We will miss her.
